BIKES AVAILABLE FOR HIRE FROM LKNZ

Ohakune and surrounding areas are a major part of the New Zealand Cycle way with two major sections operating on either side of the township, and is a must visit for any serious mountain biker in new Zealand. Ride NZ can help you plan your cycling itineraries.

The already renowned 15kms Old Coach Road is one of the first parts of the Mountains to Sea Cycle trail. The track starts off with a nice easy incline by and across a stream and heads into the ancient native bush during the incline. The rider then crosses a large historic railroad bridge and goes through a near pitch black tunnel. There is also a very nice downhill to finish. All this is in an under a 1.5 hour trip bike ride from the lodge itself. (Ask us about the shuttle to Horopito or cycle the Old Coach Road both ways)

The 46 kms 42nd Traverse is widely recognized as one of the best, and in our opinion the best mountain bike track in the north island offering spectacular views of the Tongariro National Park. It involves great up and downhill riding through old logging tracks and remote native bush. The track is well maintained, and has many undulations and jumps with an overall descent of 570 meters. To navigate the downhill at speed requires a high skill level, however the track can be completed by any skill level of rider if they take care down the steeper parts. Note : Be aware that when there has been heavy rain, rivers in the area can be prone to flash floods. For a great bike for this track, be sure to contact TCB.

Nearby are some of the fastest paced downhill tracks in the country. The Turoa Ski field road has 1000m of vertical descent curving around nicely cambered corners, and reaching speeds of over 70 km/h if you are brave, or merely cruise and admire the 200 kilometres long views. (See reception for available Shuttle)

In the Rangataua Forest region, accessible by 4wd, there are a range of downhill tracks for all levels, some of which are advanced. This is great fun in the summer; rent a bike for the day, take a picnic and explore some great native bush tracks.

For a family ride, the 16 kms Marton Sash & Door Tramway route is ideal. This 2 hour ride starts and finishes in National Park Village. Bounce in and out of pine plantation as you travel alongside the North Island Main Trunk Railway Line. Go back in time as you travel through relics from the bush tramway era including the remains of log bridges, a small wood dam, pumice cuttings and rail irons.

The 27 kms Fishers Track is a downhill track with stunning views over the Tongariro National Park. Starting with a short climb through the Erua forest, you can enjoy the 520m descent through native bush into the Retaruke Valley and along gravel roads to the War Memorial Monument on the corner of Oio Road .

Fancy a jet boat trip after your bike ride? Then you should take to opportunity to cycle to the Bridge to Nowhere. These guys can arrange that for you!
